There are nearly 750 nonprofit organizations in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties in Florida, providing everything from health and youth services to education and the arts, per a new report from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
But while "the nonprofit sector is vital to the overall well-being of our community," the report notes, " challenges in raising unrestricted funding interfere with service and program delivery."
The foundation analyzed data from The Giving Partner, an online database of nearly 750 nonprofit organizations in the area, including endowments, revenue, expenses, staff-to-volunteer ratio, and the size of nonprofits by revenue, annual expenses, and staff-to-volunteer ratio.
The report found that nonprofits in the area are "robust and diverse," serving the needs of individuals and communities, but that challenges in raising unrestricted funding interfere with service and program delivery.
"It's important to have a mix of small, medium, and large organizations to serve the varying needs of a community," the foundation's director of insights tells the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, noting smaller organizations have an easier time pivoting when the need arises.
